Discover an unexpected side of Scandinavian fishing: carp in two peaceful private forest ponds near the 60th parallel, close to the Oslofjord and approximately 35 minutes by car from central Oslo.
Nordic Carp combines the rare experience of catching carp this far north with exclusive fishing access, specialist guiding and personal hosting. From a focused fishing day to a longer stay, the experience is shaped around the conditions, your interests and our knowledge of the waters.
Two Private Ponds, Two Dedicated Guides
The experience is personally hosted by John Fredrik Hove together with carp specialist Simen Blix of Norway Fishing.
Nordic Carp is available for one to six guests and is particularly well suited to parties of two to four. With two guides and exclusive access to two private carp ponds, we can divide the guests between the waters and adapt the fishing to different interests and experience levels.
At full capacity, there are three guests per guide, allowing time for individual instruction and personal attention.
The ponds hold common carp, mirror carp and grass carp, with individual fish reaching approximately 15 kilograms. Their size is impressive, but the true distinction is the setting: catching powerful carp in quiet Scandinavian woodland at almost 60° north.
Fish Your Way
Both experienced anglers and complete beginners are welcome. You can fish with conventional carp tackle and bait, try surface fishing or explore the challenge of catching carp on a fly.
Simen specialises in fly fishing for carp, including sight fishing and dry-fly fishing when conditions allow. Watching a carp approach and take a fly from the surface can be one of the most memorable moments of the experience.
Fly-casting lessons can be incorporated into your visit, whether you are picking up a fly rod for the first time or looking to improve your casting and presentation. Instruction is adapted to your level and ambitions.
No previous fly-fishing experience is required. Guests with different preferences can fish in their own way, and suitable equipment, flies and bait can be arranged.
The ponds also hold a natural population of brown trout, offering additional fishing opportunities according to the season, conditions and your interests.
Historic Ice Ponds beside the Oslofjord
These former ice-harvesting ponds form part of the local history of Nærsnes, a coastal community with a rich ice-export heritage. During the nineteenth century, ice harvested in the area was shipped to European markets.
Today, the ponds provide a peaceful and distinctive setting for fishing close to the Oslofjord, combining Scandinavian nature with a piece of local history.
One Day or a Longer Stay
Join us for a focused fishing day from Oslo or stay longer for a more complete experience.
We recommend two fishing days, allowing time to explore both ponds, develop your technique and experience the waters under changing conditions.
The daily schedule is flexible and planned around your preferences, the weather and the activity of the fish. Longer stays can also be combined with time in Oslo or additional fishing, nature and cultural experiences.
An Experience We Shape Together
Every Nordic Carp experience begins with a personal conversation. We take time to understand your fishing experience, interests, expectations and preferred level of comfort.
Together, we shape the visit around the season, the conditions and the experience we believe will work best for everyone involved.
The experience can include:
* Personal hosting by John Fredrik Hove
* Specialist carp guiding with Simen Blix
* Exclusive access to two private carp ponds
* Fishing equipment, flies and bait
* Personal fly-casting lessons
* Meals by the water
* A private chef
* Carefully selected hotels or other accommodation
* Private vehicle transfers from Oslo or your hotel
* Airport transfers
* Private boat transfers, subject to suitable conditions and availability
* Additional fishing, nature or city experiences
Through a trusted network, we can also respond to particular requests concerning accommodation, dining, wine, transport and other details that may add something special to your stay.
Following our initial conversation, we will only propose and confirm an experience when we are fully confident that the agreed arrangements can be delivered to the standard we have discussed.
Arrive by Road or Fjord
The ponds are approximately 35 minutes by car from central Oslo, making the experience easy to combine with a city stay.
For guests who would like the journey itself to become part of the experience, private boat transport across the Oslofjord can be arranged when weather, sea conditions and availability allow. We coordinate the onward journey from the landing point to the ponds.
Season and Conditions
The usual fishing season runs from approximately 20 April to 1 November, depending on conditions and availability.
Water temperature, weather and fish behaviour influence both the methods and the daily programme. Surface feeding and dry-fly opportunities depend on suitable conditions.
We fish for free-ranging fish in natural waters. Catches and fish sizes can never be guaranteed.
