Private Arctic Char Ice Fishing in Norway
Experience ice fishing for Arctic char in the Norwegian winter, surrounded by frozen lakes, snow-covered forests and mountains.
Arctic char is one of Scandinavia’s most beautiful freshwater fish. Its striking colours, strength and close connection to cold mountain waters make it a particularly fitting species for a winter fishing experience.
Rather than offering one fixed location, I select the destination according to current ice and fishing conditions, safe access and the kind of winter setting we want to create together.
Ten Years of Winter Fishing
I have many years of ice-fishing experience from Gudbrandsdalen, Jotunheimen, Østerdalen and the forests of Nordmarka near Oslo.
These regions offer very different landscapes and fishing opportunities. Some destinations are relatively accessible, while others provide a more remote mountain experience requiring additional time and physical effort.
The selected area, expected conditions and practical arrangements are clearly described before booking.
More Than the Moment of the Catch
Ice fishing is about more than the moment a fish takes the bait. Drilling the first holes, reading the frozen landscape, moving between fishing areas and preparing something warm by the ice are all part of the day.
The programme is adapted to your fishing experience, physical ability and tolerance for winter conditions. Complete beginners are welcome, while experienced anglers can enjoy a more focused approach to locating and catching Arctic char.
All necessary fishing tackle, drilling equipment, bait, transport and safety equipment can be provided.
Guests should bring suitable warm clothing and winter footwear. Thermal suits can be arranged when required, provided this is agreed before arrival.
Privately Arranged
The experience is available for one to six guests and is particularly well suited to parties of two to four.
Every booking begins with a personal conversation. We discuss your fishing experience, physical level, expectations and preferred standard of accommodation and service.
The destination and programme are then shaped around your interests, my experience and advice from trusted local specialists. Additional guides can be arranged when required by the number of guests, destination or planned activities.
One Day or a Complete Winter Stay
A focused day on the ice can be arranged where conditions and travel distances allow. For mountain destinations and guests travelling from abroad, a stay of at least two days will usually provide a better experience and greater flexibility.
Depending on the destination and your preferences, the experience can include:
* Personal hosting by John Fredrik Hove
* Specialist local fishing guides where relevant
* Carefully selected fishing access
* Necessary fishing permits
* Complete ice-fishing equipment, drilling equipment and bait
* Personal instruction
* Safety equipment
* Thermal suits by prior arrangement
* Transport to and from the fishing location
* Daily planning based on current weather, ice and fishing conditions
* Warm meals on or near the ice
* A private chef
* Carefully selected accommodation
* Preferred food and specially selected wines
* Private local transport and airport transfers
* Additional winter, nature or cultural experiences
* Arrangements for accompanying guests who do not fish
From a secluded mountain cabin to a comfortable hotel or private property, the accommodation and level of service can be adapted to the experience we agree upon.
Through a trusted network, I can also respond to particular requests concerning dining, transport, equipment and the small details that make a stay personal.
Safety and Changing Conditions
All fishing takes place on natural ice. Safety always comes before the planned programme.
Local ice, access and weather conditions are assessed before every outing, and appropriate safety equipment is carried. A particular lake or destination can never be guaranteed far in advance.
If conditions are unsuitable, I will suggest a safer location, an adjusted programme or alternative dates.
Following our initial conversation, I will only propose and confirm an experience when I am fully confident that the agreed arrangements can be delivered responsibly and to the standard we have discussed.
We fish in natural waters. Catches and fish sizes can never be guaranteed.
Season
The usual season runs from December or January until March, depending entirely on location, weather and safe ice conditions.
High-mountain and lowland waters develop differently throughout the winter. The final destination and programme are therefore confirmed according to current local conditions.
Every Experience Begins with a Conversation
Contact me with your preferred dates, number of guests, fishing experience and wishes for the stay.
I will suggest the most suitable possibilities and prepare a personal proposal covering the destination, guiding, equipment, accommodation, meals, transport and total price.
